THE WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL
January Through April · Wellington, Florida · Twelve Weeks · Six Thousand Horses
2027: dates to follow
The Winter Equestrian Festival is twelve weeks of show jumping in Wellington, Florida, and the largest horse show in the world. Six thousand horses. Riders from more than forty countries. Sixteen million dollars in prize money.
It is not a week one attends. It is a season one moves to.
The Migration
Every winter the horses come south. At the height of the season there can be as many as twenty thousand of them in a single village.
Wellington was farmland until the 1970s. The polo came first and the show jumping followed it, and the place rebuilt itself around horses: streets named for them, fifty-seven miles of trails cut between the properties, and a barn economy that empties out in April.
Riders take houses for the season and bring their grooms with them. A family that keeps horses in Virginia or Vermont will spend January to March here and go home when it thaws.
The Weeks
Each of the twelve weeks is its own horse show, run Wednesday to Sunday, with its own classes and its own prize money. Four carry five-star international jumping. The last is the Rolex Grand Prix, which closes the festival.
Saturday night is the week’s grand prix, jumped under lights in the international arena. It is the night the village turns out.
Half a mile away the dressage runs its own circuit across the same twelve weeks, which means a person can watch both disciplines at the highest level in a single afternoon, for twelve weeks running.
What to Know
Saturday Night Lights is free. Parking costs twenty-five dollars and admission costs nothing, which makes it the best value on this calendar.
Gates open at six and the class begins at seven. Come early for a place at the rail.
The competition runs from six-year-old children to seventy-year-old amateurs across fifty-five divisions, alongside Olympians. The hunter rings in the morning are quiet and worth an hour of anyone’s time.
The Palm Beach polo season runs concurrently a few minutes away, and a Sunday can hold both.
The mistake is coming for a day. The festival is a place more than an event, and a week teaches more than an afternoon does.
The Court
The Winter Equestrian Festival is not the Court’s own. Boxes at Saturday Night Lights, tables in the international arena and introductions to the barns are sought on a member’s behalf, and the Court arranges the whole of it: getting there, where to stay, and the table afterward. Houses in Wellington are taken a season ahead.
How one becomes a member is set out under Admission.
