THE MUSEUM GALA NIGHT
Early December · New York · An Evening · Hosted by the Court
2027: dates to follow
The Museum Gala Night is an evening in early December in a New York museum after closing, arranged for members alone: a curator opens one wing rather than the whole building, and supper is served in the museum once the walking is done.
It exists because, as Vogue wrote of a gala in the Guggenheim’s rotunda, “To wander through a museum after hours is an extraordinary experience”.
The Private View
A vernissage, French for “varnishing”, is a preview of an exhibition before it opens. “If the vernissage is not open to the public, but only to invited guests, it is often called a private view.” It began with painters varnishing their pictures before the exhibitions of the Royal Academy and others, when “patrons and the élite” came in on varnishing day to see them.
New York’s museums give their evenings to their friends. The Costume Institute Benefit began in 1948 as a dinner, at fifty dollars a ticket. The American Museum of Natural History holds its Museum Gala in early December; on 5 December 2024 it gave cocktails, a dinner by Marcus Samuelsson, an auction called by Christie’s, and a first look at the Apex Stegosaurus. At the Guggenheim’s International Gala of 2023, cocktails were taken in the café and the guests came “in black tie”. The Frick’s Young Fellows Ball of 2025, the first since the house reopened, sold out in five days, under a dress code of its own, “Porcelain Garden”.
A museum after hours is a privilege, and the museums say so. Hosting an event at the Met is “a special privilege we extend to our Corporate Partners and eligible non-profit organizations”, with “after-hours access” for twenty to 550 seated, or up to a thousand standing. The Neue Galerie, in a mansion of 1914 by Carrère & Hastings at 1048 Fifth Avenue, opens to corporate members and private donors for cocktails, seated dinners and “private viewings of exhibitions”: up to 250 standing, sixty seated in Café Sabarsky, with food and drink on the main floor only. An evening for a hundred or fewer there asks for a Corporate Benefactor membership of $10,000 and an administrative fee of $5,000, with security and catering on top; its galleries reopen on 12 November 2026. Downtown, the Fraunces Tavern Museum lets its rooms for private evenings “rich in historic ambiance”.
The rule in every house is the same: food and drink stay out of the galleries. The walk comes first, and supper afterwards, in another room.
